WHAT IS THE PRACTICE OF ONCOLOGY?

Oncology is the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. A veterinary medical oncologist has spent at least three additional years of specialty training beyond veterinary school. Specialization in radiation oncology is often an additional two years of training after certification in medical oncology. With less than 140 ACVIM board-certified medical oncologists world-wide, Southwest Veterinary Oncology is proud to claim four as members of their oncology team.

Cancer exists in many forms. It is not a single disease for which there is one cure. Each form responds differently to treatment, and treatment options vary depending on the type of cancer. Cancer treatment may include surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, immunotherapy or a combination of these.

The initial consultation will allow the doctor to examine your pet and your pet’s medical records and determine what additional diagnostic tests may be required to further evaluate your pet’s cancer. We strive to provide a comprehensive evaluation of your pet’s condition and options for treatment. We want to provide you and your primary care veterinarian the information necessary to help you to make an informed decision regarding the cancer treatment that is best for your pet and your family.

LIVING WITH A PET WITH CANCER

The diagnosis of cancer in a beloved pet is frightening for owners. But there is hope. Many options for treating cancer exist today. Unlike human patients, most cancer treatments in dogs and cats have minimal to no side effects. For many dogs and cats with cancer, remissions can be achieved and life extended at good quality. The majority of patients lead active, normal lives while undergoing treatment. It is our goal to balance state-of-the-art cancer treatment with quality of life for our patients.

PET LOSS SUPPORT

Pets are a special part of our lives. They provide companionship, loyalty, and unconditional love. Loss of a beloved pet can be devastating for an owner. Grief at the loss of a beloved pet is no less important than that of losing a special friend or family member. Grief is a natural response to the loss of a significant relationship. You are not grieving "just an animal."

If you have lost a beloved pet or have a pet with a terminal illness, help is available at the Pet Grief Support Service by calling 602-995-5885. The Service provides a telephone helpline, support meetings, information, pet loss literature and reading lists, and referrals to appropriate resources. The Pet Grief Support Service is offered by the Companion Animal Association of Arizona, Inc., and is operated entirely by trained volunteers who have suffered the loss of a pet. Ongoing consultation is provided to the volunteer staff by a certified mental health professional who specializes in pet loss and bereavement, and by a veterinarian affiliated with the Arizona Veterinary Medical Association.
